Prayer & Support for Haiti after 7.2 Magnitude Earthquake

Dear Friends in The Florida Conference of The United Methodist Church,

We learned today of the 7.2 magnitude earthquake in Haiti. Our prayers arise to God for the people of this beloved nation, and for the Haitian diaspora. We acknowledge the love and Christian fellowship we share with Haitian people across the Florida Conference.

We ask that our congregations lift the Haitian people in prayer tomorrow, August 15, in worship. You may contribute financially to this urgent crisis through UMCOR (Advance #982450) or the FLUMC Haiti Humanitarian Response. We are asking our congregations to receive an offering in worship next Sunday, August 22.
We claim these promises. God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble (Psalm 46). And Jesus is with us in the midst of the storm (Mark 4). May we draw near to God and to one another in a spirit of generosity toward our neighbors in a moment of crisis and with faith that God will provide.
The Peace of the Lord,

Home Worship for Sunday, September 5, 2021

Staying home is a form of loving your neighbor. Think about it, you may be staying home for your own health but in reality you then become less of a carrier to others that you might come in contact with. We hope you will feel close to God who is near even if we are far apart. May God Bless you and Keep you.

If you are in a high risk category, it is highly recommended that you remain safe as much as possible. Caregivers and family members are encouraged to do the same, so as to not jeopardize their loved ones.

If you are not comfortable attending socially distanced activities, please stay home and stay in touch!

Benediction Medley

by Charles "Doc" Erwin

Reading the Psalms: Psalm 145: 1-16 (CEB)

I will lift you up high, my God, the true king.
I will bless your name forever and always.
2 I will bless you every day.
I will praise your name forever and always.
3 The Lord is great and so worthy of praise!
    God’s greatness can’t be grasped.
4 One generation will praise your works to the next one, proclaiming your mighty acts.
5 They will talk all about the glorious splendor of your majesty; I will contemplate your wondrous works.
6 They will speak of the power of your awesome deeds; I will declare your great accomplishments.
7 They will rave in celebration of your abundant goodness; they will shout joyfully about your righteousness:
8     “The Lord is merciful and compassionate,
very patient, and full of faithful love.
9     The Lord is good to everyone and everything; God’s compassion extends to all his handiwork!”
10 All that you have made gives thanks to you, Lord; all your faithful ones bless you!
11 They speak of the glory of your kingdom; they talk all about your power,
12     to inform all human beings about God’s power and the majestic glory of God’s kingdom.
13 Your kingdom is a kingship that lasts forever;
your rule endures for all generations.
The Lord is trustworthy in all that he says,
faithful in all that he does.
14 The Lord supports all who fall down,     straightens up all who are bent low.
15 All eyes look to you, hoping, and you give them their food right on time,
16     opening your hand and satisfying the desire of every living thing.

Assurance of Forgive

(inspired by James 3:17)

“The wisdom from above is first pure,

then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield,

full of mercy and good fruits,

without a trace of partiality or hypocrisy” (James 3:17).

In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven,

and we are given a new way to live.

Let us accept God’s grace,

and live new lives of faith, obedience, and joy.

Prayer and Song: Stand by Me by Playing for Change

Lord, the storms of life are raging, and we need you to stand by us. The winds are trying to toss us to and fro, and we need you to stand by us. We want to be prosperous, like the tree planted by the streams of water the psalmist talked about. We, too, want to yield fruit, but life is threatening our productivity. Some of us are so stressed that our leaves are starting to wither. God, we need you to order our steps and give us the strength to handle whatever is on the path that you have assigned. Show us your grace and your favor. In your Son Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Sermon: "Finding Meaning" John 1:1-17

In the beginning was the Word
and the Word was with God
    and the Word was God.
2 The Word was with God in the beginning.
3 Everything came into being through the Word,
    and without the Word
    nothing came into being.
What came into being
4     through the Word was life,[a]
and the life was the light for all people.
5 The light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness doesn’t extinguish the light.

6 A man named John was sent from God. 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning the light, so that through him everyone would believe in the light. 8 He himself wasn’t the light, but his mission was to testify concerning the light.

9 The true light that shines on all people
    was coming into the world.
10 The light was in the world,
and the world came into being through the light,
but the world didn’t recognize the light.
11 The light came to his own people,
and his own people didn’t welcome him.
12 But those who did welcome him,
those who believed in his name,
he authorized to become God’s children,
13         born not from blood
nor from human desire or passion,
        but born from God.
14 The Word became flesh
and made his home among us.
We have seen his glory,
glory like that of a father’s only son,
        full of grace and truth.

15 John testified about him, crying out, “This is the one of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me is greater than me because he existed before me.’”

16 From his fullness we have all received grace upon grace;
17     as the Law was given through Moses,
so grace and truth came into being through Jesus Christ.

Verse 1
Come let us worship our King
Come let us bow at His feet
He has done great things

See how His love overcomes
He has done great things

O Hero of Heaven You conquered the grave
You free every captive and break every chain
O God You have done great things
We dance in Your freedom awake and alive
O Jesus our Savior Your name lifted high
O God You have done great things

Verse 2
You’ve been faithful through every storm
You’ll be faithful forevermore
You have done great things
And I know You will do it again
For Your promise is yes and amen
You will do great things
God You do great things

Hallelujah God unshakable
Hallelujah You have done great things
You’ve done great things

Blessing: Exemplify the Change

The time has come to become soldiers of the cross. Let us go out into the world proclaiming the Name of Jesus. We know his Name, and the time has come for others to know it as well. Let us testify of his goodness, be witnesses to his mercy, and exemplify the change he has made in our lives. Go, and carry the Name of Jesus with you.
