November 14 2021 Veteran's Sunday

Armistice Day became Veterans' Day by an act of Congress in 1954, changing its purpose and scope. President Eisenhower called on the nation to remember the sacrifices of those who fought in all our nation's wars, to celebrate the contributions of all veterans of military service, and to rededicate ourselves to the task of promoting an enduring peace. It is Eisenhower's call that remains the three-fold purpose of Veterans' Day: remembering those who fought and died, celebrating all veterans, and promoting an enduring peace.

Our Home Worship service is much like our in-person service. As you work your way through Home Worship, savor the experience. We hope it is meaningful for you. Staying home is a form of loving your neighbor. You may be staying home for your own health but in reality you then become less of a carrier to others that you might come in contact with. If you are not comfortable attending socially distanced activities, please stay home and stay in touch! We hope you will feel close to God who is near even if we are far apart. May God Bless you and Keep you.

Hymn: UMH #108 God Hath Spoken by the Prophets

1 God hath spoken by the prophets, spoken the unchanging Word,

each from age to age proclaiming, God the One, the righteous Lord!

'Mid the world's despair and turmoil, one firm anchor holdeth fast:

God eternal reigns forever, God the first, and God the last.

2 God hath spoken by Christ Jesus, Christ, the everlasting Son;

brightness of the Father's glory, with the Father ever one;

spoken by the Word incarnate, God of God, ere time was born;

Light of Light, to earth descending, Christ, as God in human form.

3 God yet speaketh by the Spirit, speaketh to our hearts again;

in the agelong Word expounding God's own message, now as then.

Thru the rise and fall of nations, one sure faith yet standing fast,

God abides, the Word unchanging, God the first, and God the last.

God the first, and God the last.

Prayer: Our Souls Are Poured Out Before You

Our souls are poured out before you, O God, as we look for more in life than contentment with family, friends, and possessions. We thank you, dear Lord, for all of your blessings. Yet, in our souls, we long to be a blessing to others on your behalf.

As Abraham was a blessing to many nations, As Hannah longed for something in her life to offer back to God, We long to make a difference in this world for you.

Open our eyes, good Lord, to whatever you have already entrusted

for the good of your people. Open our ears, Lord, to intersections between human need and heart’s desire. Open our hearts, Lord, to recognize and nurture new gifts, to consider unique possibilities, dawning on the horizon.

Our souls are poured out before you, O God. Let your servants find favor in your sight. Amen.

Scripture: 2 Kings 2:1-15 (CEB)

Elijah goes to heaven

2 Now the Lord was going to take Elijah up to heaven in a windstorm, and Elijah and Elisha were leaving Gilgal. 2 Elijah said to Elisha, “Stay here, because the Lord has sent me to Bethel.”

But Elisha said, “As the Lord lives and as you live, I won’t leave you.” So they went down to Bethel.

3 The group of prophets from Bethel came out to Elisha. These prophets said to Elisha, “Do you know that the Lord is going to take your master away from you today?”

Elisha said, “Yes, I know. Don’t talk about it!”

4 Elijah said, “Elisha, stay here, because the Lord has sent me to Jericho.”

But Elisha said, “As the Lord lives and as you live, I won’t leave you.” So they went to Jericho.

5 The group of prophets from Jericho approached Elisha and said to him, “Do you know that the Lord is going to take your master away from you today?”

He said, “Yes, I know. Don’t talk about it!”

6 Elijah said to Elisha, “Stay here, because the Lord has sent me to the Jordan.”

But Elisha said, “As the Lord lives and as you live, I won’t leave you.” So both of them went on together. 7 Fifty members from the group of prophets also went along, but they stood at a distance. Both Elijah and Elisha stood beside the Jordan River. 8 Elijah then took his coat, rolled it up, and hit the water. Then the water was divided in two! Both of them crossed over on dry ground. 9 When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, “What do you want me to do for you before I’m taken away from you?”

Elisha said, “Let me have twice your spirit.”

10 Elijah said, “You’ve made a difficult request. If you can see me when I’m taken from you, then it will be yours. If you don’t see me, it won’t happen.”

11 They were walking along, talking, when suddenly a fiery chariot and fiery horses appeared and separated the two of them. Then Elijah went to heaven in a windstorm.

12 Elisha was watching, and he cried out, “Oh, my father, my father! Israel’s chariots and its riders!” When he could no longer see him, Elisha took hold of his clothes and ripped them in two.

Elisha succeeds Elijah

13 Then Elisha picked up the coat that had fallen from Elijah. He went back and stood beside the banks of the Jordan River. 14 He took the coat that had fallen from Elijah and hit the water. He said, “Where is the Lord, Elijah’s God?” And when he hit the water, it divided in two! Then Elisha crossed over.

15 The group of prophets from Jericho saw him from a distance. They said, “Elijah’s spirit has settled on Elisha!” So they came out to meet him, bowing down before him.

Is it more important to focus on the blaze of glory or to remember a heart of love? Would you rather serve with a soldier that had the highest skill or with one who is your friend? The external glory isn’t as important at the internal conditions of the heart.

The Reading of the Psalms: Psalm 23 (CEB)

A psalm of David.

23 The Lord is my shepherd.

    I lack nothing.

2 He lets me rest in grassy meadows;

    he leads me to restful waters;

3 he keeps me [a] alive.

He guides me in proper paths

    for the sake of his good name.

4 Even when I walk through the darkest valley,

    I fear no danger because you are with me.

Your rod and your staff—

    they protect me.

5 You set a table for me

    right in front of my enemies.

You bathe my head in oil;

    my cup is so full it spills over!

6 Yes, goodness and faithful love

    will pursue me all the days of my life,

    and I will live[b] in the Lord’s house

    as long as I live.

Oceanview Worship: Love Like This

Verse 1
When I am a wasteland, You are the water
When I am the winter, You are the fire, That burns

Verse 2
When I am a long night, You are the sunrise
When I am a desert, You are the river
That turns to find me

Chorus 1
What have I done to deserve love like this
What have I done to deserve love like this

Verse 3
Your voice like a whisper, Breaking the silence
You say there's a treasure, You look 'til You find it
You search to find me

Chorus 2
What have I done to deserve love like this
What have I done to deserve love like this
I cannot earn what You so freely give
What have I done to deserve love like this
