Home Worship

for Sunday May 16, 2021

Staying home is a form of loving your neighbor. Think about it, you may be staying home for your own health but in reality you then become less of a carrier to others that you might come in contact with. We hope you will feel close to God who is near even if we are far apart. May God Bless you and Keep you.

If you are in a high risk category, it is highly recommended that you remain safe as much as possible. Caregivers and family members are encouraged to do the same, so as to not jeopardize their loved ones.

If you are not comfortable attending socially distanced activities, please stay home and stay in touch!

Prelude: Meditation on "The Lord's My Shepherd"

Call to Worship

Acts 1:15-17, 21-26

God, we thank you for the call to lead. We thank you for setting us apart for your service. We understand that every day is not going to be easy and that we shall face some cloudy days. So, Lord, we come asking for your grace. Give us your grace, so that we can face the hardships and not be overtaken but stand secure knowing that you are with us. Give us the favor of David and the wisdom of Solomon. Let our decisions be favorable in your sight and your people be blessed. It’s in Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

A Charge to Keep I Have

#413 in United Methodist Hymnal

1. A charge to keep I have, a God to glorify, a never-dying soul to save, and fit it for the sky.

2. To serve the present age, my calling to fulfill; O may it all my powers engage to do my Master's will!

3. Arm me with jealous care, as in thy sight to live, and oh, thy servant, Lord, prepare a strict account to give!

4. Help me to watch and pray, and on thyself rely, assured, if I my trust betray I  shall forever die.

Prayer of Assurance and Grace

Leader: God of Grace, you call us to be different from the world,

People: but the world is seductive, and so we come here to be strengthened.

Leader: God of Vision, you hold before us an alternate way of life,

People: different priorities, different loyalties, different values.

Leader: But we know that the world is not only seductive but powerful,

People: and so we are drawn in to following its priorities, accepting its values, showing loyalty to its gods.

Leader: God who blesses the meek, the peacemakers, the merciful,

People: forgive us when we lose sight of these qualities, when we misunderstand their role in the world.

. . . time of silent prayer . . .

Leader: Rejoice and be glad! God is gracious and God offers blessings.

God calls us to life in the world, God offers us the chance to explore how to live out God's vision. We are called, we are forgiven, we are blessed.

People: Thanks be to God. Amen.

Message: "Instant Apostle"

Pastor Emily Denmark McGee

Lectionary Series

Scripture: Acts 1:15-17, 21-26 (CEB)

A replacement for Judas

15 During this time, the family of believers was a company of about one hundred twenty persons. Peter stood among them and said, 16 “Brothers and sisters, the scripture that the Holy Spirit announced beforehand through David had to be fulfilled. This was the scripture concerning Judas, who became a guide for those who arrested Jesus. 17 This happened even though he was one of us and received a share of this ministry.”

21 “Therefore, we must select one of those who have accompanied us during the whole time the Lord Jesus lived among us, 22 beginning from the baptism of John until the day when Jesus was taken from us. This person must become along with us a witness to his resurrection.” 23 So they nominated two: Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also known as Justus, and Matthias.

24 They prayed, “Lord, you know everyone’s deepest thoughts and desires. Show us clearly which one you have chosen from among these two 25 to take the place of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas turned away to go to his own place.” 26 When they cast lots, the lot fell on Matthias. He was added to the eleven apostles.

Blessing - Strength to Serve

Leader: Let us go forth into the new seasons of our lives.

People: We go forth into growing and changing and living.

Leader: Let us go with caring awareness for the world and all that is in it.

People: We go to discover the needs and opportunities around us.

Leader: Let us go forth in peace and be led out in joy.

All: We go in God’s continuing presence, with the power to love and the strength to serve. Amen.
