Let All Things Now Living

Let all things now living , A song of thanksgiving

To God the Creator , Triumphantly raise

Who fashioned and made us , Protected and stayed us

Who still guides us on , To the end of our days

God's banners are o'er us , His light goes before us

A pillar of fire , Shining forth in the night

Till shadows have vanished , And darkness is banished

As forward we travel , From light into light

Psalm 124 and Gloria Patri

Leader: if it had not been the Lord he was on our side – – let Israel now say – –

People: if it had not been the Lord who was on our side, when foes rose up against us, then they would have swallowed us up alive, when their anger was kindled against us;

Leader: then the flood would’ve swept us away, the torrent would have gone over us;

People: then the raging waters would’ve gone over us

Leader: blessed be the Lord, who has not given us as prey to their teeth!

People: we have escaped as a bird from the snare of the fowlers;

Leader: The snare is broken, and we have escaped!

People: our help is in the name of the Lord who made heaven and earth.

The Church’s One Foundation - Joseph Farrar

1.  The Church’s one foundation Is Jesus Christ her Lord;

She is His new creation, By water and the Word:

From heav’n He came and sought her, To be His holy Bride;

With His own blood He bought her, And for her life He died.

2. Elect from every nation, Yet one o’er all the earth,

Her charter of salvation, One Lord, one faith, one birth;

One holy Name she blesses, Partakes one holy food,

And to one hope she presses, With every grace endued.

5. Yet she on earth hath union, With God the Three in One,

And mystic sweet communion, With those whose rest is won:

O happy ones and holy! Lord, give us grace that we,

Like them, the meek and lowly, In love may dwell with Thee.

Pastoral Prayer - Rev. Betty Kniss

Lord, we hear the wonderful words from Matthew’s gospel in which Simon Peter acknowledges Jesus as the Christ, the son of the living God. He is given the name Peter, the rock upon whom the church will be built. We would like to be the kind of “rock” that Jesus could count on – to be strong in the face of adversity; brave when danger is present; compassionate when sorrow and strife prevail. You have called us to be your church and we ask for your transforming love that we might be better witnesses for you.

Today we name in our hearts before you people that we love who are dealing with sorrow and illnesses; people who feel abandoned and alone; people who are entering schools and colleges, military service, the workforce. We also name those people and situations filled with joy and hope; a new home, the birth of a child, celebrations of special occasions, and often just a beautiful day. Hear the cries of our hearts to you, O God. Heal and transform lives. For we ask these things in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Words of Assurance

Through the abundance of God’s mercy and forgiving love, you are empowered to be disciples, to reach out to others, to offer the words and deeds of hope in a struggling world. God’s blessings are poured over you for this service.

Scripture Matthew 16:13-20 NRSV

Peter’s Declaration about Jesus

13 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”

14 And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, but others Elijah, and still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”

16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

17 And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father in heaven.

18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it.

19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”

20 Then he sternly ordered the disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.

The church that Jesus meant to build on Peter, a person, is a community of people defined by who we are in Jesus Christ.

Blessing from Ephesians 3:17-19

(May) Christ dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
